Study Abroad

Study abroad continues to be a significant experience for students. We are proud that K carries on the tradition of an immersive study abroad/away experience. Faculty, staff and students, whether they decide to go off-campus or not, benefit from the time spent in community in another location besides the K bubble. Getting a chance to practice a language, learn a different perspective on a global issue, or build self-confidence sets students up for their next step after graduation and beyond.

Participation by Academic Majors

Study abroad/away reflects the value of the Liberal Arts, focusing on developing 21st century skills such as building communication skills, working on diverse teams, building empathy and perspective taking, not to mention language skills. Majors may select from a variety of programs and are encouraged to “think beyond the major” as they develop their goals for their experience.

Study Away

Experiential Learning in the United States

The CIP supported 18 domestic study away students during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Domestic study away allows students to experience experiential learning in a new environment while staying in the U.S. Students spend the majority of their time in an internship while also focused on a particular area of study including the arts, environmental justice, or business and entrepreneurship.

While we know a number of students attend Kalamazoo College to participate in the study abroad/away opportunities, other students may believe study abroad/away is not accessible to them, either due to financial barriers or concerns about the experience. We focus much of our program on developing relationships with students who may not visit the CIP. Peer advisors host dinners with student organizations, visit classes, and offer campus events to reach as many students as possible.

Global Hornets Program

The GHP, which began in Fall 2019, was created with the expectation of increasing the number of first-generation college students participating in a study abroad/away program. The GHP initiative provides first-generation students with a “package” that includes application assistance, targeted information sessions, specialized announcements and reminders, and individualized advising throughout the process.

What you they get
  • 70-100% of round-trip international airfare covered
  • $500 cash stipend while on a study abroad program
  • Passport application or renewal fees covered
  • Strong relationships with other first-gen students and CIP staff.
  • Extra tips for success and guidance for your study abroad journey.
  • Food provided at GHP events!
What does it take
  • Attend 8 eligible events (6 GHP events + 2 CIP-sponsored)
  • 3 orientations (you’ll need to attend these anyway)

Fostering Growth Through Encouragement and Involvement

We have 16 new J-1 students and 6 new F-1 students. The new F and J visa holders come from 11 different countries.

Many of the international students are teaching assistants for the language labs.

In addition to a comprehensive orientation, students are encouraged to participate in and supported with a variety of activities and events outside the classroom.
