Academic Advisors
Studying in other educational systems offers students opportunities to develop academic skills and intellectual capacities that are not emphasized in the U.S. This exposure helps them become stronger learners who are better equipped to accomplish their individual goals.
Faculty Grant
The Faculty Study Abroad Grant is designed to give Kalamazoo College faculty an opportunity to make personal and professional contact with colleagues and program staff at one of the local universities that host a Kalamazoo-sponsored study abroad program.
Academic Advisor Quick Tips
Pairing newly acquired abilities with the foundation K provides positions our students for success within more than one approach to education. Study abroad participation is not automatic upon admission to Kalamazoo College. Study abroad is an optional academic program, and in order to participate, students must submit a completed application that meets GPA and other requirements, course prerequisites, deadlines, assignments and expectations for preparation.
The Role of the Academic Advisor
The role of the academic advisor in the study abroad process is to help students fully consider the academic, intercultural, and career advantages of study abroad. Some questions advisors should ask their advisees about study abroad include:
1. What are your priorities and/or goals for this experience? What transferable skills (problem solving, planning, conflict resolution, listening, storytelling) do you wish to develop on study abroad?
2. What do you see yourself doing after K? How will this program impact your ability to pursue Life after K?
3. Are you concerned about any obstacles to participate in study abroad?

One Quarter Programs yield 3-4 K Units (equivalent to one quarter) and take place during fall, spring or winter quarter.
•Two Quarter Programs yield 6 K Units (equivalent to two quarters) and are typically equal to one semester at the program. For programs that start in the fall students depart for these programs from July through September and are expected to return to campus in the spring. *PLEASE NOTE: Students accepted to 2 Quarter Fall-Winter 6 K-Unit programs that end in November or December are not eligible to take classes or live in campus housing during the Winter quarter, even if they are back in the U.S. They will return to classes at K for the Spring quarter, following the end of their study abroad program. Additionally, they will be billed in accordance with the college’s billing cycle. 3 K-Units for Fall and 3 K-Units for Winter quarter. This is because they will have earned a total of 6 K-Units. All financial aid scholarships and awards will be applied. For programs that start in the winter students depart for these programs in January and are expected to return to campus in the fall. All two quarter programs allow students to earn 2/3 of a year’s credit.
•Three Quarter Programs yield 9 K Units (equivalent to three quarters). Students depart for these programs August through September and are away for the entire academic year.
Faculty Study Abroad Grant
Visits can be the primary purpose of a faculty member’s application for funding or be an additional project to be carried out in conjunction with another professional international activity. Awards will be based upon an evaluation of the applicant’s plan for the visit with preference given to those faculty members who have not been abroad to a Kalamazoo study abroad program location within the past five years. Applicants should submit a completed application to the Center for International Programs via Hornet Passport for consideration by the Experiential Education Committee.
The typical grant is $2,700 to $3,000. Faculty Study Abroad Grants may be used in conjunction with Faculty Development funding. Due to rising costs of airfare, we encourage you to submit an application sooner rather than later.
