• You must have at least a 2.0 GPA to apply. Some programs require a higher GPA.
  
• You cannot receive credit for studying abroad unless the program is approved by the Center for International Programs (CIP).
  
• If you want to attend a program that is not approved, you may be able to petition CIP for a one-time exception.
  
• Students on academic probation or with serious disciplinary issues are not eligible.
  
• All incomplete grades must be finished before you leave.

Students may participate in one off-campus program during their time at Kalamazoo College:

• One study abroad program (1, 2 or 3 quarters), or
• One domestic study away program (1 or 2 quarters).

A maximum of 10 units of off-campus credit may be applied toward graduation. This allows students to earn credit for programs that span up to a full academic year.

• You can apply to only one program at a time.
  
• Incomplete applications may be treated as late.
  
• Admission decisions are based on factors such as:
  • GPA
  • Language preparation (if required)
  • Essays
  • Recommendations (for some programs)
  • Academic record
    
• About 95% of students are accepted to their first-choice program.

• Attend all required classes, orientations, workshops, and meetings.
  
• Follow local laws, program rules, and housing expectations.
  
• Respect your host community, culture and program expectations.
  
• Alcohol or drug misuse can lead to immediate dismissal.
  
• Unexcused absences from class are not allowed.

• To earn credit, you generally must earn the equivalent of a C or better.
  
• Study abroad grades appear on your transcript but do not affect your Kalamazoo GPA.
  
• Courses must fit Kalamazoo's liberal arts curriculum.
  
• Online or distance-learning courses usually do not transfer for credit.
  
• Save syllabi, assignments, and course materials in case departments need them to evaluate your credits.

• Make sure your passport and visa are valid before departure.
  
• Many partner programs require students to obtain their own visa.
  
• Read all emails carefully and meet every required deadline.
  
• Missing visa deadlines could delay or prevent participation.

• Leaving a program early without approval can result in:
  
  • Loss of academic credit
  • Failing grades
  • Additional costs
    
• Students generally must stay for the entire program to receive credit.

You may be removed from a study abroad program for:

• Illegal drug use
  
• Alcohol abuse
  
• Repeated misconduct
  
• Missing classes or required activities
  
• Violating local laws
  
• Unauthorized travel or housing changes
  
• Behavior that puts yourself or others at risk

If dismissed, you may:

• Receive F grades
  
• Lose housing
  
• Be required to return home immediately
  
• Pay additional costs yourself

• Check Hornet Passport regularly for requirements and deadlines.
  
• Attend all orientation sessions and pre-departure meetings.
  
• Respond quickly to emails from CIP and your host program.
  
• Keep copies of important documents and coursework.
  
• Ask CIP questions early rather than waiting until the last minute.
  
• Treat study abroad as both an academic program and a chance to represent Kalamazoo College responsibly.
